Throughout history artists have been drawn to the towering dunes, pristine beaches and jewel-like setting of Lake Michigan's eastern shore now known as 'the Art Coast of Michigan'. For over 100 years folks have journeyed here to mellow out in the area reminiscent of small town America, whose hallmarks are scenic beauty and a unique collection of boutiques and extensive array of working artists galleries. We'll take a walking tour of the town, maybe ending at the corner drug store soda fountain where hand-creamed sodas and malts have been a specialty for 81 years. There will be time to explore the many galleries, boutiques and restaurants of Saugatuck's Boardwalk. A short ferry ride to neighboring Douglas takes us to the SS Keewatin-a Titanic-era steamship now a museum. And we'll soar to the top of the towering sand hills in our 'dune schooner' for those ready to try something a bit more adventurous. A lazy sternwheeler ride aboard the Star of Saugatuck along Lake Michigan's shore provides a view of extravagant homes, wetlands, forests and panoramic dunes. The area's other claim to fame as 'the Bed & Breakfast Capitol of the Midwest' can't be ignored so we'll share the experience of accommodations in a selection of the area's finest full service B&B's. A day trip over to nearby Grand Rapids brings us to the historic Gerald Ford Presidential Museum and a visit to a fall favorite, Robinette's Applehaus and Gift Barn, with lunch at Bistro Bella Vita combining French Provencal cuisine with a taste of Italy.
